When we're in middle school, we get the idea of really giving a shit drilled out of us. We're trained by our peers to strive for Cool. Cool, which means not caring. Blending in. Never getting riled up about anything.
Contentopia is a content club, based on the idea of a book club but more focused on bringing out pieces of film, short stories, youtube video, photo collections, anything that turns the light on for the Content Curator of the session.
Content gets a whole milieu of branding ideas and baggage attached to it. For us, it just represents anything you've ever experienced and then thought:
I have to show this to someone.
and then turned around and told everyone
You have to read/hear/see/listen to/experience this.
It's the slew of small talk you have with someone until the subject of Future Tech gets brought up, or Leadership, or Food, or Bullying, or Literally Anything. A simple mention of a topic and someone literally lights up. You can see it in their face, they're instantly engaged. Someone who'd been silent for an hour suddenly can't shut up. Those are the topics you'll find at Contentopia. We don't believe in averages or voting for the best topic, either. Every time, a different person with different values and a different life history picks whatever lights them up, and we learn more about it.
You're not committing to a whole month of reading a book that you'd rather sell a kidney than read. It's usually about 20 minutes to 3 hours of your life, every three weeks. We also don't believe in choosing the most popular option because the popular option is boooooooo-riiing. You hear that? Popular is boring! Cool is boring! To hell with it!
You must be curious as to what witchcraft we employ to keep out 'cool' topics that are of no real passionate interest to anyone. It's rocket science! We roll a dice!
That's right. At the end of every Contentopia we all roll a dice. Whoever gets the highest number that hasn't had the opportunity to serve as Content Curator yet picks the next location, day, time and piece of content for 3 weeks in the future. The time is of their choosing, so long as it falls into the happy hour range. The day is of their choosing, so long as it's Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, 3 weeks from the current day.
The only rule for content is that it should be easily digestible. No dissertations because...well...that's not very much fun. Or very do-able. And we don't think anyone would show up. We wouldn't, and we're everyone in this club (so far), so as of right now our hypothesis is standing the test of reason. Welcome to Contentopia. Join us for a little fun, and lots of caring from everyone!
